At The Ashton Care Home, we've set up a sensory room, to allow residents to take the time to relax in a calming environment away from all noise and distractions.
Our sensory room has been set out in a way that is free of clutter, with an arrangement which should not be moved to ensure that when residents go back into the sensory room, the layout is familiar to them, in a welcoming and calming environment. With clear walkways, and clutter always cleared, we ensure that there is no reason for our residents to be confused within, so if any sensory objects have been used, they get returned to their specific place, where residents can locate them.
One of our residents Mary enjoyed an afternoon of relaxation when she relaxed with a weighted blanket over her, overlooking our bubble lamp. She was so relaxed, that one of our staff caught her dropping off to sleep.
Residents Alex and Albert also took some time away from the busy atmosphere in the main lounge, where they felt more relaxed to do an activity, of colouring in some pictures, whilst listening to music. Whilst they were enjoying themselves being creative, we used some of our smell pots to further enhance their relaxation.
There is also the opportunity for some of our residents to get away from the cinema, for a more personal time, where they can sit back and enjoy a familiar favourite.
Sensory rooms are important when supporting residents with dementia care. Allowing them to safely explore and stimulate all of their senses. Creating an environment, which supports stress and pain relief whilst maximising the potential to focus. All of which can help with communication and memory.
Our sensory room at The Ashton Care Home is just one of the ways that we support our residents to live a healthy and happy life. Learn more about how we can support your loved ones at our care home in Hinckley, Leicestershire, by contacting our team or booking a tour.
