Maureen’s Journey From Complex Care to Comfort at The Ashton

When Maureen joined us for dementia care at The Ashton Care Home in March 2025, she required a high level of specialist support. Living with a grade 4 pressure injury, a urethral catheter and at significant risk of malnutrition, Maureen was admitted as bed-bound and unable to actively take part in the social life she had always enjoyed.

At the time of admission, she was experiencing discomfort, low mood and fatigue due to both her condition and the level of medication required to manage her pain. Our priority was to ensure Maureen felt comfortable and supported, while putting in place a clear and structured plan to improve her health and overall quality of life.

A Remarkable Recovery Through Specialist Care

From the moment Maureen arrived, our nursing team collaborated with her and her loved ones to implement a person-centred care plan. Through regular clinical assessments and collaboration, we worked on wound healing, pain management, improved nutrition and emotional well-being.

As her condition began to improve, we introduced further support through occupational therapy. This allowed Maureen to use a wheelchair and gradually spend more time out of bed. The results of her occupational therapy marked a significant turning point for Maureen, as it allowed her to rejoin community life, enjoy meals with others and reconnect with activities she has always loved.

Over time, Maureen’s progress has been truly remarkable. Her wound has fully healed, her pain has significantly reduced, her nutritional intake has improved and she no longer requires a catheter. This has also made a transformative impact on her overall well-being.

Today, Maureen can comfortably sit in communal areas, socialise with others and create new cherished memories with family and friends.

Our team have reflected on her journey with pride:

Nurse Ophelia said - “It’s lovely to see Maureen having lunch with family and friends in the lounge. Maureen had a lot of nursing needs when she was admitted, but we thought it was a great challenge to learn and grow and we did it. We are proud of the support, care and attention we have provided

Our Manager, Preet, added - “When we first admitted Maureen, it was clear that she would require a lot of clinical intervention. From the day she moved in, our nursing team were very focused and determined to improve her quality of life, ensuring they did everything possible to heal the wound and reduce her pain. Maureen disliked her catheter so it became a great relief when she no longer needed it. It’s lovely to see her enjoying life without discomfort and I commend our team for their dedication to resident well-being.

Maureen herself also shared some touching words - “It was a tough decision when I was moving into The Ashton, but looking back, it is the best decision I made and I don’t regret being here. I wasn’t sure about how I was going to manage previously but the team are amazing and I don’t know how they manage to do it. I now have no wound, putting on weight, getting in my wheelchair and having meals with my family, I can’t thank the team enough, I love you all”.
